Accidental discovery

In the last century, an American researcher worked in these places. The purpose of the expedition was interesting for the history of exhibits from the life of the Incas, taken during the conquest of the country by the Spaniards. The accident led the scientist to the edge, which greatly amazed him. Before him opened a truly sample of architecture and engineering construction. The neighborhoods of the two-story houses, the palaces, the square with the altar for sacrifices, all pointed to a high level of technical knowledge. Especially struck by a network of roads, in size and degree of skill, not inferior to the road system of Ancient Rome. The creation of such a complex required considerable knowledge. Stunning skillful use of the landscape with a combination of construction techniques, the quality created. In the late nineteenth century, Machu Picchu became a monument to the heritage of mankind, at the beginning of this century – one of the New Wonders of the World.

Unresolved mystery

Constructed by incredible efforts, the city lasted a little more than a century. The question remains open: why and why was it erected in this place? Currently there are two versions. According to the surviving information, here was the residence of the Supreme Ruler, who after his death was the center of education. The second is about the military and defensive function of the city. It was from here that the tribes and regions under the rule of the Incas were supervised. After the invasion of the Spaniards in the Empire, the city was completely deserted. Either the cessation of food supplies from the capital served as the departure of residents from the city, or another option – it is not known. There is an opinion that part of the population went to war against the Spaniards, and part, saving the treasures and remains of their luminaries, went to the city, which later was searched for by the scientist who discovered Machu Picchu. By the way, a huge number of artifacts, taken out for research purposes, was returned to the rightful owner and now they are exhibits of the museum.
