Created laser 10 times more powerful than normal

An international group of scientists announced the successful completion of the test heavy duty laser “Bivoj” (Bivoj), received its name in honor of the legendary Czech athlete. According to the news Agency Agence France-Presse, quoting the Czech and British scientists, “superlaser” has a capacity of 1000 Watts, which makes it “10 times stronger” any other laser of this type.

“It’s a new world record, which is important,” says John Collier, the head of the British research enterprise Central Laser Facility.

“It’s just a formality. However, what is really important is the fact that all technology developed here can be used including for creation that these are heavy-duty laser systems”.

Still, the researchers explain that they created the laser is the most powerful among its class. In General, in the world there are more powerful lasers. For example, Japanese laser for experiments with fast ignition, are capable of creating pulses with a power of 2 OEM (petawatts), or 2 quadrillion watts. However, such a laser, and the like, has increased the so-called average power is a combination of re intensity and energy and is able to achieve high power only a few times a day.

“These lasers have very high peak power, but to achieve it they are able a few times a day. In addition, they do not possess the average capacity. Our laser has the highest average power in the world,” commented Thomas Lobe, Director of the Czech project High Average Power Pulsed Laser.

The project of creation of laser “Bivoj” at a cost of $ 48 million. The weight of the laser system is about 20 tons. A team of scientists hopes to bring new technology to the commercial market in the second half of this year, where it can be used in engineering purposes, for example in the hardening of metals and in industrial production, for example in the manufacture of semiconductor materials.
