With crystals instead of tears, a 22-year-old resident of the village of Spandaryan in the Shirak region of Armenia Satenik Ghazaryan. From her right eye every day, up to 30 hard and sharp crystals are taken, like glass fragments.
The girl was examined by doctors in the neighboring town of Artik, a few crystals were removed from her eyes and sent to Yerevan for a diagnosis. “All the doctors are in shock, they have not encountered such a disease and do not know how to treat it. They have not even made a diagnosis,” she says.
At first, doctors suspected that Satenik herself was putting glasses in her eyes to attract attention, Sputnik Armenia reports. However, after lengthy checks, they just shrugged, advising them to wait for the results of the examination of the samples taken from her. When the results arrive, no one knows what extremely upsets the members of her family.
The girl got married at the age of fifteen, and lives in a low-income family. Relatives are not able to pay for her treatment abroad, if needed, and even within the country they will not be able to do it. There is no hope and help from parents.
Husband Satenik supports his spouse and hopes for the help of doctors, reports the portal “MIR 24”. She was interested in the case at the Ministry of Health. According to the Deputy Minister of Health of Armenia Hovhannes Harutyunyan, the chief adviser of the Ministry of Health, ophthalmologist Artashes Zilfyan met with Satenik. Doctors plan to hold another consultation, to collect anamnesis – perhaps then it will become clear what is happening with the patient.
On news sites, several more similar stories are reported – in particular, one girl from Brazil and one from Lebanon. Western doctors consider this a manifestation of cystinosis, a congenital disturbance in the metabolism of amino acids, in which cystine crystals are deposited in the organs and tissues of a person.
