A team of scientists from the free University of Amsterdam announced the Robot Baby project, which aims to “recreate the origin of life in laboratory conditions with the involvement of mechanical components.” The purpose of the experiment is to develop computer algorithms to teach robots to reproduce themselves.
The mechanisms comprising moving parts, will independently choose the suitable “partner” on the basis of algorithms for the estimation of fitness. If a robot is “like” another person’s point of view of evolution, will exchange a “genotype” — essentially, a code and hardware configuration, which will be mixed and sent via Wi-Fi network on a 3D printer to print a new copy.
According to the researchers, the Robot Baby is the “first step on the path to robotic ecosystems that may arise in difficult conditions”. So, self-modifying robots can adapt to the situation and environment for yourself, without waiting for human action.
