Scientists from Antarctica, living on the high-tech station Neumayer III, collected the first crop of vegetables grown without land, daylight or pesticides. The experiment was carried out as part of a project that should help astronauts grow food on other planets.
Biologists have grown up 3.6 kilograms of salad, 18 cucumbers and 70 radishes in a special greenhouse. The temperature outside it was below minus 20 degrees Celsius.
Representatives of NASA are already growing greens on the ISS. The Neumayer III project should help astronauts learn how to grow a wider range of vegetables on the Moon and Mars.
