Near-Earth asteroid 2012 TC4, discovered on October 4, 2012, was successfully observed on July 27, July 31 and August 5 on the Very Large Telescope, due to which the orbit of the asteroid was clarified.
The fact is that before that there was only a 7-day arc of observations made a few days after the discovery of the asteroid, so it was not clear at what exact distance it would fly from Earth on October 12, 2017. According to new elements of the orbit, the asteroid will fly from the center of the Earth at a distance of about 50 thousand km, that is, slightly higher than geostationary satellites.
