Researchers have discovered a new large hole and reported it to emergency services. The fact that the charged particles, which transports the solar wind can enter the Earth’s atmosphere and cause interference in communication systems and navigation equipment. Also, the grid could trigger the alarm system, so that operators are warned of a possible “false alarm”.
Coronal holes are regions in the solar corona where the density and temperature of the plasma is reduced 100 times or more. They usually appear during periods of decreasing solar activity and lead to changes in space weather, e.g. geomagnetic storms.
