11 people killed in a landslide in Myanmar

A landslide occurred in Myanmar’s Mandalay region, burying four houses in the township of Mogok.

Fourteen people were buried under the collapsed houses. Search and rescue teams, including Myanmar Red Cross and Fire Department officials, have been examining the rubble of the buildings for the past few days. Eleven bodies were found. Three people survived but were injured.

According to locals, the landslide was caused by recent heavy rains. About two weeks earlier, heavy rains had also taken their toll: on August 12, a wall of a building collapsed in a landslide, killing three people. More than 145 mm of rain fell in just a few hours on August 12.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) reported on August 27 that heavy monsoon rains since late July have affected 125,000 people in Myanmar, mostly in Kachin, Kayin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan states, but also in Mandalay and Thanintaray regions.
