12 people were killed in heavy rain and flooding in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The dead have been registered in the Ilala and Kinondononi police zones, said Lazaro Mambosasa, the commander of the Dar es Salaam special zone police.
“On October 13, Mariam Yahaya (45), a resident of Wingunguti, died after drowning while trying to save her belongings, which had been washed away by the water,” he said.
Yahaya’s remains were recovered from the Msimbazi River, along with five other bodies. Two of the victims were identified as 18-year-old Heriet Kanuti and 19-year-old Ipyana Mwakifuna. The other three have not yet been identified.
The body of another victim, 30-year-old Filipo Feliziani from Tabat Kimang, was found in the Tenge River.
“The victim died after falling and was washed away by water while trying to cross the bridge used by pedestrians in Tabata Kimanga.”
Two unidentified men were found dead in Ukonga Sabasa and on the Msimbazi River. Meanwhile, two children from the same family drowned after their home in the Kogo Valley was flooded. Two adults also died.
