A large landslide blocked the Colca River in Arequipa, Peru

A large landslide came down in the province of Cayloma, Peru, blocking the Colca River in the Chivay region and forming a natural dam.

The landslide occurred near the town of Chivay and is about 300 meters long.

Authorities estimate that the river is blocked by at least 800 m3 of rock and earth, and they have ordered that the rubble be cleared to divert the accumulated water.

There were no reports of injured people.

Another landslide in June 2020 in the same province blocked the Colca River and damaged several farmlands, affecting 80 hectares of crops between Huasapampa, Kello, Calcho and Huancaro.
