Cars in ditches and closed highways. A snow storm has hit northern Spain. Up to 20 centimeters of precipitation fell in some places.

In the Basque Country, some highways were closed to heavy vehicles. Many drivers are stuck at gas stations.

From here, truckers have not been able to leave for 15 hours. They may have to stay here for 24 hours.

“It’s a difficult situation because the snowplows can’t be everywhere at once.”

The snowfall has hampered traffic on 140 roads. The maximum level of weather danger was declared in the Basque Country, Navarra and Cantabria.

Authorities have deployed nearly 850 snowplows. 156 thousand tons of anti-icing agents have been prepared. They are spread on the roads.

Weather forecasters warn that it may snow all week.
