Alberta ski resort closed due to heavy snowfall

A popular ski resort in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains was forced to close Wednesday due to heavy snowfall as a severe winter storm hit the region.

Sunshine Village in Banff closed its doors after Parks Canada restricted access to the access road all day due to heavy snowfall and extreme avalanche danger, the ski resort said in a tweet.

“We are suspending operations today. We apologize for any inconvenience,” the resort added.

The system responsible for all this snowfall is no doubt building up its muscle. The Weather Network predicts 50+ inches of deep snow in the Rocky Mountains near Highway 93 and 20 to 40 inches in Jasper and Lake Louise.

According to TWN, significant accumulations of snow are also expected along Highway 22, from north of Cochrane to Rocky Mountain House, then west to Nordegg.

The forecast also reports that several systems could move across the prairies over the next week, bringing snow to the southern prairies this weekend. Other severe weather systems could hit Alberta early next week.
