An earthquake in Pakistan’s Balochistan province kills 20 people, injures 150

At least 20 people were killed in a magnitude 5.9 earthquake that struck Pakistan’s Balochistan province early Thursday morning.

Authorities say the death toll could rise and that many people died as structures collapsed. Many of the dead were women and children.

The 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 9 kilometers. Shallow earthquakes can cause more damage.

Rescue operations are still ongoing. Local authorities report that at least 150 people were injured, some of them taken to the hospital in critical condition.

More than 100 mud houses collapsed and a large number of buildings were damaged, leaving hundreds of people homeless.

According to officials, significant damage was done to the Harnai area.

Harnaya, east of Quetta, has a large number of coal mines that may have collapsed during the earthquake.

Balochistan Interior Minister Mir Ziaullah Lang said emergency services had been dispatched to the area.
