An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred near the South Sandwich Islands

On November 1, 2021 at 00:02 UTC, a shallow earthquake registered by the U.S. Geological Survey as M6.1 occurred near the South Sandwich Islands at a depth of 34 km (21 mi). The EMSC reports M6.1 at a depth of 80 km (50 miles).

The epicenter was about 2,500 km (1,553 mi) southwest of Edinburgh Seven Seas, St. Helena, and 2,600 km (1,616 mi) east of Ushuaia, Argentina.

There are no people within a 100 km (62 miles) radius.

In the past 30 days, 48 M4.5+ earthquakes have been recorded in this region, including M6.3 on October 4.
