Australia has the highest daily rainfall in 79 years

In October, Darwin received the highest daily rainfall in 79 years – more than a meter of rain fell on the city.

“The skies opened up in Darwin,” said meteorologist Sally Cutter.

“It was in stark contrast to the past two wet seasons, which were much drier.”

By 9am Thursday, 177mm of rain had been recorded in Marrara, north of Darwin, and 136.8mm in the Royal Darwin Hospital area.

At Darwin airport, 113 mm of rain fell.

The previous highest daily rainfall in October was recorded in 1969 at 95.5 mm.
