Dead humpback whale washed ashore near Jalama Beach, California

The carcass of a humpback whale washed ashore near Jalama Beach. Justin Wiesbicke of the Marine Mammal Health and Incident Response Program says his team had difficulty reaching the whale as the carcass was floating in and rising out of the water at high tide.

They hope to determine the cause of death and other information about the whale, but don’t know yet when that will be done.

Wizbike says humpbacks are a protected species and advises people to stay away from the whale.

According to visitors to the beach, the whale washed ashore about a week ago.
