Dead whale shark washed ashore in New South Wales, Australia

The carcass of a young five-meter whale shark was thrown onto Terrace Beach near Eden.

The whale shark is a large pelagic shark from the rhinkodont family, or whale sharks of the Wobbegong-like order.

The largest shark species currently in existence, and also the largest modern fish.

Its maximum size reaches at least 12.65 m, possibly up to 18 m and even 20 m.
