Drought in Spain and Portugal

The valley of Duero – one of the most important rivers for Spain – is a picture not typical for November. The reason for this – the strongest drought, from which the Iberian Peninsula suffered all summer.

In some areas, Duero dried up by 60%. Such old residents of these places can not remember and are preparing for crop losses. Under the impact and livestock – because of a lack of vegetation in the pastures.

The same picture – in Portugal, on which, originated in Spain, flows Duero. Here it is called Douro, and at the mouth of the river is the second largest Portuguese city – Porto.

Such a drought here was not nearly 90 years. The amount of precipitation was at least half that of the average for the year, and in order to restore the water level in Duero, unprecedented heavy rains are needed.
