Earthquake aftermath in Peru

Yesterday a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck northern Peru. Although it was extremely strong, it was relatively deep – 112 kilometers, which usually reduces damage and casualties.

The epicenter was 42 kilometers north-northwest of the coastal town of Barranca.

The 14-foot tower in the four-hundred-year-old church collapsed shortly after the quake.

Video and photos posted online showed that the historic tower, part of a 16th-century complex that is considered the oldest Catholic church in the Amazonas region, had turned into a pile of stones, although the main atrium appeared to have survived.

There were reports on social media of destruction elsewhere, including a church in southern Ecuador. The earthquake was also felt in Colombia.

The National Institute of Civil Defense of the Ministry of Defense in Peru reported no damage or injuries from the quake.
