Ebeko volcano emitted a column of smoke after eruption on Kuril Islands, Russia

An ash eruption from Ebeko volcano has been spotted on the island of Paramushir in the Kuril Islands, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team reported.

“According to visual data from volcanologists from Severo-Kurilsk, the height of the ash ejection reached 3.7 kilometers (2.29 miles) above sea level.”

According to the response team, the release of ash from Ebeko could cause problems for local airlines. An aviation color-coded volcano status warning has been placed in orange.

The ash plume has spread about ten kilometers (6.2 miles) south, the Emergencies Ministry said.

According to the unified duty dispatch service, there is no threat to the population of Severo-Kurilsk.

Ebeko volcano, located seven kilometers (4.3 miles) west of Severo-Kurilsk, became active in mid-November 2016. It is one of 36 active volcanoes in the Kuril Archipelago.
