The Sicilian volcano Etna is spewing lava and throwing out thick plumes of ash. According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the explosions came from Etna’s southeast crater.
The eruption plume reached a height of about six kilometers above sea level. Operation of a nearby Catania international airport was not affected.
Etna is the biggest of three active volcanoes in Italy, which also include Stromboli on the Sicilian island of the same name and Vesuvius near Naples, which last erupted in 1944.
