Evacuation declared after flash floods in New Mexico – 127 mm of rain in 24 hours

Flash floods hit parts of New Mexico after more than 5 inches (127 mm) of rain fell in 24 hours.

Water levels in the Pecos River and Dark Canyon jumped, causing flooding in areas of Carlsbad and Eddy County on June 29, 2021. Nearly 30 roads were closed as a result. Eddy County officials said residents living near the dam and Tansill Reservoir were being evacuated. Carlsbad Caverns National Park was closed due to flooding.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said the state is coordinating local resources in response to flooding in Eddy County, and the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is in close communication with local governments and the Army Corps of Engineers.

The National Weather Service in Midland reported more than 5 inches / 127 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to June 29 in Quinn, New Mexico. The water level in Dark Canyon in Carlsbad jumped from 4 feet to 19 feet in just 1 hour. Moderate flood levels here are 18 feet. Pecos River levels near Carlsbad also jumped to 15.24 feet June 29. Flood levels here are 14 feet.
