Flash floods in Tungurahua province, Ecuador

Three people are dead and two are missing after flash floods in the province of Tungurahua in central Ecuador.

According to Ecuador’s National Service for Risk and Emergency Management (SNGRE), the flooding occurred near the town of Baños de Agua Santa (known as Baños) after heavy rain caused the La Estancia River to overflow its banks.

Landslides were also recorded in the area, and a bridge was severely damaged, leaving about 50 people isolated in the La Estancia sector.

Five people were swept away by the torrents of water. As of September 10, rescue teams had recovered the bodies of three victims. Two people are still missing and search and rescue efforts with the local Fire Department and Red Cross are ongoing.
