Flooding in Bahla, Oman, after a year’s worth of rainfall

Sudden flooding after heavy rains in Oman caused widespread damage. Cars were submerged, homes flooded, roads closed, and buildings collapsed as a result of the “wild floods” caused by the torrential rains.

Several parts of the country, including Bahla, were affected by the extreme weather. Heavy rain also disrupted traffic in parts of Oman, cutting off towns and forcing police to block roads.

Floodwaters penetrated the bazaar, flooding tight alleys and damaging goods, and many people were stranded and forced to wait for rescue. In the coastal city, police moved 31 families to safety. The city received more than 100 mm of rainfall, more than the annual norm, and more rain is forecast.

The country’s Meteorological Office warned that the unpredictable weather would continue for several more days, and the government extended an existing stay-at-home order.
