Flooding in northern Nigeria kills five people

Flooding caused by a heavy downpour Tuesday in northeastern Nigeria’s Bauchi state killed five people and damaged 1,567 homes, an official said.

The flooding from a local river was caused by several hours of heavy rain that damaged homes, farmland and crops in seven villages in the area, according to Samaila Jarma, chairman of the Jama’are town council in Bauchi.

“We recovered five bodies from the water in the flooded areas,” he told reporters at a press briefing in Jama’are district, adding that the bodies were buried according to local traditions after a thorough investigation to identify them.

Jarma said the city council also formed a committee to examine the damage and recommend appropriate action to the state government.
