Floods in Afghanistan

Flooding kills 6 people in northern Afghanistan’s Takhar province – 70 flood deaths across the country in 2 weeks

Six people died in heavy rains and flash floods in northern Afghanistan’s Takhar province, including the provincial capital city of Taluqan on Monday night, a local official said Tuesday.

“At least six people, including five children, were killed by heavy rain and flooding in and around Talukan last night,” Haji Mohammad Ashraf said.

Several homes were also destroyed or damaged by the downpour and flooding, the official said.

Confirming the disaster, provincial police spokesman Abdul Khalil Asir said heavy rains and floods damaged several houses, gardens and farmland in the provincial capital Talukan and some areas, including Namakab, Kalafgan and Bangi, late Monday night.

Asir also said meetings are being held with local officials to survey the damaged areas and provide humanitarian aid to those affected.

In the past two weeks, heavy rains and flooding in Afghanistan have killed about 70 people.
