Forest fires blaze in Albania, northern Macedonia and Kosovo

Firefighters managed to bring under control a huge fire that broke out Monday night near the village of Kalimash in Albania, threatening the main road to neighboring Kosovo.

The fire engulfed the area above the Tirre-Kalimash tunnel, burning trees and bushes.

No one was hurt, and traffic was able to resume hours later.

In northern Macedonia, dozens of wildfires broke out after a heat wave when temperatures were at their highest in decades.

On Tuesday, firefighters fought the blaze in the village of Sarai, on the outskirts of the capital Skopje.

Thousands of acres of pine, beech and oak forests have been destroyed in the past few days, and authorities said five people have been arrested on suspicion of arson.
