Forest fires in British Columbia: More than 650,000 hectares burned

Thousands of firefighters are trying to take control of the province’s ongoing wildfires.

Since April 1, there have been 1,451 fires in B.C. that have burned just over 650,000 hectares of land.

There are currently 260 active wildfires, and here’s how they are distributed by region:

Kamloops Fire Center – 80
Southeast Fire Center – 62
Prince George Fire Center – 58
Caribou Fire Center – 32
Coastal Fire Center – 22
Northwest Fire Center – 6

More than 3,500 firefighters and other personnel are currently working on wildfires across the province, 364 of whom are outside B.C.

They are receiving air support from 209 helicopters and aircraft.

The wildfires have 63 evacuation orders and 108 evacuation warnings in effect, affecting 6,219 and 31,902 properties, respectively.

Here’s how they are distributed across the regions of the B.C. Office of Emergency Management:

Central – 52 orders and 96 warnings
Northeast – 5 orders and 7 warnings
Southeast – 2 orders and 10 warnings
Southwest – 3 orders and 3 warnings
Northwest – 0 orders and 2 warnings
Vancouver Island Central Coast – 1 order and 0 warnings
