Fuego volcano in Guatemala begins to erupt

Guatemala’s Fuego volcano, one of the most active in Central America, entered its eruption phase this Thursday, local authorities said.

According to preliminary reports, the eruption “has caused pyroclastic flows toward the Seniza Gorge,” and is also expected to affect the Trinidad Gorge. Photos and videos are already circulating on social media showing dense columns of gas and ash near the volcano, about 45 kilometers west of Guatemala City.

The bulletin of the National Coordinator of Disaster Risk Reduction of Guatemala (CONRED) reports that the main localities affected by the ashfall are Panimache I and II, Morelia, El Porvenir, Santa Sofia, Sangre de Cristo and San Pedro Yepocapa.
