Greece announces unprecedented bushfire disaster

Greece is experiencing a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions due to the heat wave and the numerous fires it has caused, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a televised address on August 9.

According to him, 586 wildfires have occurred in Greece over the past few days.

“The last days have become one of the most difficult for our country in recent decades. We are working hard to fight. But before us is a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions: in a few days, 586 fires broke out in different parts of Greece. Fires, which are very difficult to extinguish due to unprecedented heat and many months of drought, ”Mitsotakis said.

At the same time, the head of the Greek government announced 62 evacuations organized by the authorities.

Earlier, the Greek authorities urgently appealed to the Russian president with a request to strengthen the Russian aviation group fighting forest fires in Greece.
