Heavy overnight rain caused flooding in Malta

Heavy rains that continued throughout the night caused flooding. Gozo was hit the hardest, where flooding was recorded in Gheinsilem. In the Marsalforn area, streets turned into rivers.

According to the Maltese Islands weather website, the heaviest rainfall was in Gheinsilem, where 115.3 mm of rain fell.

Mayor Kevin Cauchi urged residents to be careful. Piazza tad Dehra became impassable and the area around the Amabile Kauchi playing field was under water.

Streets in Marsa and Kormi, located downstream, were also flooded and traffic was difficult. In Gjira, the council urged motorists to avoid Sir Charles Cameron Street because of a fallen tree.

In Żejtun, a pole toppled due to high winds, blocking a lane of traffic on Tal Barrani Road. Traffic lights were also out of order.

“It’s very dangerous and scary here,” one motorist said.

Manhole covers were torn off on Birkirkara/Lia Valley Road and on Kappara near the traffic circle, creating additional danger for drivers.

One driver said it took her 90 minutes to get from Jebbu to Santa Venus.
