Heavy rain caused flooding in the Algarve, Portugal

Heavy rain in the Algarve has caused disruptions in Vila Real de Santo António, where several streets were flooded.

The water level rose so high that it overflowed the sidewalks in many streets, making it impossible to move along them.

Water even penetrated homes and businesses in some parts of the city, according to the news agency Lusa, which adds that the worst floods were recorded in Rua de Angola, Avenida dos Bombeiros and a large part of the historic city center.

The floods were caused by a heavy downpour between 6 and 8:30 a.m. CDOS Faro, the regional command for rescue operations, reported that the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) recorded 42.1 millimeters of rainfall in the city in just one hour.
