Heavy rains and flash floods hit 4 departments in El Salvador

Stormy weather with torrential rains since early August has caused destruction and flooding in 4 departments of El Salvador.

Storms, high winds and heavy rains have hit El Salvador since August 02, 2021. The floods damaged many homes in the southern areas of the city of San Salvador and several more in the canton of Chanmico in the municipality of San Juan Opico, department of La Libertad, according to the Civil Defense.

Further heavy rain on August 06 caused heavy flash flooding in the city of San Miguel and adjacent areas of the department of San Miguel. Firefighters rescued people from vehicles trapped in floodwater. No injuries were reported. El Salvador’s Ministry of Environment reported that more than 60 mm of rain fell in the city of San Miguel in the 24 hours before August 7.

On August 7, Civil Protection reported 17 families affected by flooding in the municipality of San Julián in the department of Sonsonate. Areas in the municipality of San Vicente in the department of San Vicente were also affected.

On August 7, rescuers monitored the condition of a river that threatened to overflow in Colonia Malaga in San Salvador.

Heavy rains, storms and floods affected at least 3 departments of the country in April this year.
