Heavy rains cause flooding in southern Yemen

Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in the southern Yemeni city of Mukalla, where a young man was electrocuted. The floods have added to the suffering of the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula, which has survived a seven-year war.

The rain hit Mukalla Wednesday, days after a powerful cyclone was downgraded to a tropical storm after a landfall in Oman killed 12 people.

A Yemeni official said the rains caused flooding that swept away cars in Mukalla, damaged stores and homes, and downed power poles.

“At least 10 cars were swept away, several homes were damaged, and one young man died from electrocution.”

Cars were abandoned in muddy streets flooded with water.
