Heavy rains cause floods in Panama

At least two people are dead and one missing after flash flooding in Panama, according to rescue workers.

Heavy rain caused flash floods that swept through the picturesque area known to tourists as Las Cuevas de Bajano, on the shores of Lake Bajano, about 50 km east of Panama City.

The country’s national civil defense organization, Sistema Nacional de Protección Civil (Sinaproc), said the incident left 2 people dead, 1 missing and 13 injured.

Search and rescue operations continue, with authorities searching for the missing person. Some of the victims are believed to have been taking shelter in a cave in the area when they were washed away by floodwaters.

Elsewhere in the country, heavy rains over the past few days have caused floods and landslides. On November 17, about 30 homes were damaged in the Juan Diaz area of Panama City. Some flooding was also reported in the area of Bugaba, Chiriqui province.

Around the same time, heavy rain caused a landslide in the San Miguelito area of Belisario Porras, causing property damage but no injuries or deaths.
