Heavy rains cause widespread flooding in Trinidad

Overflowing rivers in South and Central Trinidad have burst their banks and flooded villages in the Caroni Plains and southern areas of Oropouche Lagoon.

Yesterday morning, the Meteorological Office declared a yellow flood hazard level on the rivers, which will last until 4:00 p.m. By 10:00 a.m., the Department of Rural Development and Local Government noted flooding in areas such as El Carmen, Kelly Village, Las Lomas and St. Helena.

The ministry said sandbags are being distributed and councilors from the respective counties are working to provide assistance where it is needed, and as soon as it is safe to do so, a damage assessment and needs analysis team will be dispatched.

According to councilmen Nicholas Kanhai and Krishna Persadsingh, parts of southern Debe, including Suchit and Gopi Trace, also remain under water from flooding.
