Heavy rains caused floods in Sri Lanka

Severe bad weather has hit parts of Sri Lanka since October 25, 2021. Two people died as a result of flash floods in Badulla, and another was killed by lightning in Mullaitivu.

According to the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Center, flooding, landslides or rain damage were reported in Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Jaffna, Badulla and Puttalam districts. Three houses were completely destroyed and another 410 were damaged. More than 120 people evacuated their homes and moved to temporary shelters.

As of November 3, nearly 6,000 people were affected, including about 2,000 in Badulla, where the Demodara reservoir overflowed.

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) said troops were assisting flood victims in Badulla after heavy rains disrupted normal life and caused significant damage over the past few days. Troops have assisted in evacuating people to safer locations, clearing waterways to ensure the uninterrupted flow of flood waters, clearing roads and managing traffic.

The Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology reported 152 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours through Oct. 31 at Tellippalaya in Jaffna. Further heavy rain and strong winds are predicted.
