Heavy rains in China forced thousands of people to evacuate

Heavy torrential rains continued over the weekend of August 28-29, 2021 in China, including in northwestern Shaanxi Province, where they caused widespread flooding and landslides.

More than 23,000 people had to be evacuated to safety, and in parts of the large Chongqing Municipality in southwest China, water levels were reportedly rising at a rate of 30-40 cm (12-15 inches) per hour.

A regional highway was flooded in Hechuan Municipality, and Chengkou County recorded the highest peak water flow in the Ren River in 20 years. Local authorities stepped up flood control measures at the highest level on August 29.
