Iceland: Volcanic eruption expected

The Icelandic authorities today issued another warning, reminding the residents of the country that a volcanic eruption is inevitable and that all the instructions of the Emergency Services should be strictly observed.

Despite the fact that the likelihood of an eruption in the next few hours has decreased, it should still be assumed that an eruption will inevitably occur.

“Warnings should be taken seriously and an eruption should be expected to begin,” the Meteorological Office’s website says.

About 3000 earthquakes were registered yesterday, and nearly 700 earthquakes since midnight. Since the beginning of the series of earthquakes on the Reykjanes Peninsula a week ago, more than 20,000 earthquakes have been recorded.

Most of the activity after midnight is concentrated in Fagradalsfjall and has shifted only to the northeast compared to yesterday’s activity.

Biggest earthquakes since midnight:

Kl. 00:08 M3.0 Fagradalsfjall
Kl. 03:25 М3,0 Fagradalsfjall
Kl. 04:17 М3,0 Fagradalsfjall
Kl. 02:34 М3,0 Fagradalsfjall

Einar Bessi Gestsson, a conservation specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said in the morning news that seismic activity still lingers in the area.

The Civil Protection Scientific Advisory Board will meet today to review the latest data and assess the situation.
