Over the past few months, earthquake rates and soil deformations on the Mauna Loa volcano have exceeded long-term background levels. HVO raised the Mauna Loa alert level to advisory, and the aviation color code to yellow.
According to recent studies, an eruption is not inevitable, and current activity levels are not cause for alarm. However, they point to changes in the system of accumulation of magma in Mauna Loa.
