Thousands of tourists arrive in Nicaragua to see a tremendous eruption of the volcano Masaya. The activity of the new lava lake is still very intense.
Located about twenty kilometers South-East of the capital Managua, it is one of the most active volcanoes in the country, its Caldera is 11 km wide.
Masaya has more than a dozen eruptive vents, surrounded by “walls” that reach a height of 3 thousand meters. The Indians called the giant Popogatepe, which means “fire mountain”, and the Spanish conquerors — “hell’s throat”.
