Increased danger level of Taal volcano, Philippines

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) upgraded Taal Volcano’s alert status from alert 1 (low activity) to alert 2 (increased activity) on March 9, 2021.

Since February 13, 2021, there has been an increase in activity on the volcano based on monitoring parameters.

The Taal Volcano Network (TVN) recorded a total of 28 episodes of volcanic tremors, 4 low frequency volcanic earthquakes (LFVQ) and 1 hybrid earthquake at shallow depths less than 1.5 km (0.93 mi) beneath the Taal or TVI volcano island in 24 hours. until midnight UTC on March 9th.

Volcanic tremors increased seismic energy compared to previously recorded episodes and lasted from 3 to 17 minutes.

The total number of volcanic tremors has risen to 866 since the onset of increased activity on 13 February.
