India: Himachal bridge destroyed by boulders sliding down hill, nine tourists killed

Nine tourists were killed and several injured after a massive landslide collapsed a bridge in the Sangla Valley of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday.

The terrifying video shows large chunks of rock breaking away from the mountain and rolling down into the valley. The video shows a section of the bridge collapsing and falling into the river after a boulder hit it.

“All 11 victims are tourists whose cars were hit by the boulders,” said Saju Ram Rana, Kinnaur’s police chief, adding that the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

A medical team is working at the site, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Jairam Thakur expressed regret over the deaths in the accident.

“It is very sad that a car carrying tourists was hit, killing nine people and injuring two, and injuring one passerby. May God grant peace to the souls of the victims and strength to the families of the victims,” Mr. Thakur tweeted in Hindi.

“All measures are being taken to treat the victims of the accident. I wish them a speedy recovery,” the tweet from the prime minister’s office said.

Prime Minister Modi also announced aid of 2 lakh for the families of those killed in the accident and 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

The Meteorological Department recently issued a landslide warning for Himachal Pradesh due to heavy rains predicted in the next few days. Over the past few years, landslides have become a common occurrence in this hill state,
