Lagoon Santa Maria del Oro turns red in Mexico

The Santa Maria del Oro Lagoon turned brownish red overnight, surprising the residents of Nayarita, Mexico.

The lagoon of Santa Maria del Oro, almost 2.25 km long and 1.2 km wide, is located inside a crater formed by a meteorite thousands of years ago.

The Crater Lake, also known as the Enchanted Lagoon, contains fresh water that continually changes color from blue to vibrant green.

The color change is associated with lower temperatures this year, scientists say. Colder and denser water, which is usually found at the bottom of the lake, rises to the surface of the lake, changing its color
