Seventeen people were killed and six injured by lightning strikes in eight districts of the country in just one day.
Five people were killed and six injured in Sirajganj, four were killed in Chattogram, two each in Manikganj and Feni, and one each in Madaripur, Shariatpur, Noakhali and Munshiganj.
In Sirajganj, at least five people were killed and six others injured in separate lightning strikes.
The dead are Juwel Rana (24), Alhaj Pandit (20), Faridul Islam (15), Leili Begum (36) and Rafiqul Islam (40). They are from different places in the area.
Meanwhile, at least six people were injured in separate lightning strikes yesterday, the incidents occurred between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
The injured are now being treated at various local hospitals. Lightning struck them while they were working outside in the rain.
In Chattogram, four people, including two women, were killed in separate lightning strikes while they were working outside in Fatikchhari, Boalkhali and Mirsharai upazila.
The victims were Sazzad Hossain, Md Jahangir, Lucky Das and Bhanu Shill.
In Feni, two children were killed by lightning in Shonagazi upazila.
The dead were identified as Md Al Amin and Tamanna Akhter, said Md Shajedul Islam Polash, the officer in charge of the Shonagazi police station.
In Manikganj, two were killed in separate lightning strikes in Gior upazila and Daulotpur upazila.
The deceased were Mohammad Shaheen and Gholam Mostafa, said Md Riaz Uddin, chief of the Gior police station.
In Munshiganj, one Apoorba Barman was killed and two others were injured when lightning struck them while they were playing in the rain at Shekernagar village in Shirajdikhan upazila, said Md Nasir Sheikh, head of Shekernagar investigation committee.
In Naohali, Md Khokon died after being struck by lightning in Shonadia in Khatia upazila, said Abul Khayer, chief of Khatia police station.
In Madaripur, another victim Ayesha Begum died in Shibchar district upazila.
In Shariatpur, Atikur Rahman, a ninth grader, died today from a lightning strike in Jajira upazila.
