Lightning strike kills 3 people in Uganda

Three people died on the spot after being struck by lightning in Kamuserwa Cell, Nyarurambi Parish in Rubanda City Council, Rubanda District.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. Friday during a heavy downpour.

Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Mr. Elly Maate, identified the victims as Stanley Sunday Owoyesiga, 63, principal of Golden High School in Rubanda City Council, Ben Kwikiriza, 16, and Bright Orikiriza, 35, a resident of Karambo Village, Muko County in Rubanda County.

According to Mr. Noman Tushabe, LCIII chairman of the Rubanda City Council, all the victims took shelter in the same place because they planned to visit the home of their friend who lost a relative.

“We are very concerned because such incidents have become commonplace in the Kigezi subregion. Imagine, on Tuesday lightning struck two people dead and injured four others in Kanungu, and before the end of the week it struck three people and six sheep dead and injured one in the Rubanda area. Now everyone is scared,” he said.
