Lightning strikes kill 1,178 people in eight years across Bangladesh

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the number of deaths from lightning strikes has increased in the country during the monsoon.

Lightning strikes are a big problem during the monsoon in Bangladesh, as the country has the third highest number of lightning strikes in the world.

“In recent years the country has seen an increase in deaths from lightning strikes, especially in Haor districts. At least 1,178 people died from lightning strikes between 2013 and 2020,” DGHS spokesman Dr. Nazmul Islam said at a media briefing Sunday.

April, May and June are the months most prone to lightning strikes in the country, he said, adding that installing safe electrical connections and lightning rods in homes and implementing modern building codes should ensure safety from lightning.”
