The Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs) reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 143 km, 18 km from the city of Talagutong.
The institute said that the earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, could cause aftershocks, but not cause damage or the threat of a devastating tsunami.
The earthquake was also felt in the cities of General Santos and some other nearby cities.
