Malaysia – More than 200 Baling residents affected by flooding

More than 200 people in the district were affected by flooding after a prolonged downpour yesterday, 12 families were forced to evacuate their homes.

Rosida Kassim, secretary of the Balinga District Disaster Management Committee, said the evacuees are now seeking shelter at flood relief centers in SK Titi Gantung and SK Bandar in Siong. She said a total of 225 families in Pulai, Baling/Bongor and Siong were affected by the flooding.

“The flooding occurred after several hours of heavy rain from 5 p.m. yesterday until midnight, causing the Sungai Ketil to overflow,” she said in a statement.

Rahma Abdul Rahman, 74, of Kampung Padang Che Mas, Pulai, was twice affected by the flooding, which left her home flooded with a half-meter layer of water.

“The first flood happened around 8 p.m., and just when I thought the worst was over, my house flooded again two hours later,” she said.

This is the second flooding for residents of this village in two months, she said. The river’s strong current also caused the three-meter bridge connecting the village to Baling to collapse.

Village head Mohd Shahruddin Ghazali said he had alerted authorities to what had happened. Meanwhile, in Pendang, 140 evacuees from 36 families are still seeking shelter at the Tanah Merah Flood Relief Center after their homes were hit by last Thursday’s flooding.
