Winter came too early for parts of the South Island and snow fell in summer. A cold snap brought about 8 cm of snow to the Cardrona Alpine ski resort today.
Regular summer activities in the mountains are suspended for the whole day.
Cardrona spokeswoman Jen Holtham said the warm ground at this time of year means the snow is likely to melt too quickly to be of any use to winter sports enthusiasts.
Holtham said snow is expected to continue to fall all day.
